Warehouse space disappears quickly. One minute the layout works fine. The next, pallets are stacking up and aisle space feels tight. Drive in pallet racking solves that problem. Stamina Storage Systems design, supply and install drive in pallet racking for warehouses that need maximum pallet capacity within a limited footprint.  By removing internal aisles and allowing forklifts to enter storage lanes directly, the system stores far more pallets than conventional pallet racking. Put simply, you store more stock without expanding the building.

What Is a Drive-In Racking System?

Standard pallet racking requires an aisle for every rack row so forklifts can access pallets individually. That works well for access, but it uses a lot of floor space. Drive in racking works differently. Forklifts drive directly into storage lanes inside the racking structure. Pallets sit on load rails that run along the depth of each lane, creating deep storage channels with far fewer aisles.

This system works well when warehouses store:

  • Large volumes of the same SKU
  • Batch controlled products
  • Palletised goods with steady turnover
  • Seasonal or buffer stock

You will often see drive in racking in food distribution, cold storage and manufacturing warehouses where bulk storage matters.

If you need direct access to every pallet, another system may suit better. But for high density storage, drive in racking is hard to beat.

What’s the Difference Between Drive-In & Drive-Through Racking?

Drive-in racking:

  • Forklifts enter from one side only
  • Pallets are stored deep within lanes
  • Stock follows a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) flow

Drive-through racking:

  • Forklifts enter from one side and exit from the other
  • Stock flows in a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) sequence

Is Drive-In Racking Right for Your Warehouse?

Drive-in racking is ideal for:

✔ High pallet volumes with low SKU variation✔ Cold and frozen storage environments✔ Food & beverage batch storage✔ Manufacturing buffer stock✔ Operations prioritising space utilisation
It may not be suitable if:
✖ You require direct access to every pallet✖ You manage a large variety of SKUs✖ Your operation demands high-speed individual picking

Typical Specifications & Configuration Options

Every drive-in pallet racking installation is designed around your operational requirements. Below are common configuration variables:

Specification Design Considerations
Pallet types UK, Euro or bespoke sizes
Load capacity Engineered to suit pallet weights and product type
Lane depth Configurable to maximise storage density
Rack height Single or multi-level installations
Forklift type Counterbalance or reach truck compatibility
Stock flow LIFO (drive-in) or FIFO (drive-through)
Safety options Guide rails, upright protection, end-of-aisle barriers

Our team ensures all systems are designed in line with relevant UK safety standards and operational best practice.

Proven Results for UK Warehouses

We recently installed a drive-in pallet racking system to store large cable drums at a Network Rail depot in Warrington.

Network Rail now benefit from a purpose-built storage solution that supports ongoing infrastructure operations while making far better use of available warehouse space.

Our client relationships are built on safe design, professional installation and practical warehouse expertise.

Drive-in Pallet Racking - FAQ's

Here’s some of the most frequently asked questions we asked about when it comes to exploring if a drive-in or drive-through racking system is the right choice for a business. Hope these help, but if wee have missed anything, please feel free to call our expert team on 0113 307 5068

Drive-in racking is a high-density storage system where forklifts enter a single aisle to load and retrieve pallets. It follows a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) stock rotation method and is ideal for storing large quantities of the same product.

Drive-in pallet racking is a system with a single entry point, generally used in a LIFO (last-in, first-out) inventory flow, whereas drive-through racking the access will from one side and exit from the other; enables FIFO (first-in, first-out) flow.

Drive in racking offers many benefits, including:

  • It eliminates many aisles so you can store more pallets in the same footprint.

  • Cost-effective because of denser storage, it can reduce costs associated with space.

  • It’s designed to withstand heavy loads and the impact of forklifts

  •  Forklifts can drive into the storage lanes, improving loading/unloading times.

  • Suitable for cold storage – Often used in refrigerated or freezer environments due to its space efficiency.

Drive-in racking is ideal for operations storing large volumes of similar products with low turnover, where frequent individual pallet access isn’t needed. It’s especially effective when maximising high-density storage is a priority and warehouse floor space is limited.
